Classes

One of the highlights in my Marc journey was meeting the people in my class. We were a group of 12 female students. There were no males in our class which I think was perhaps a good thing as it enabled us to discuss issues that we would perhaps not have discussed as openly if there were males present.

I thoroughly enjoyed the company of these girls and we laughed and giggled a lot. I fondly recall Mogkadi’s comments when asked about her proposal “What is trending now…” she said, referring to her current title. Mogkadi’s admonishment, with a straight face, that “We must reflect on this….” whether we were discussing something serious, or something inane, bought me out in giggles.

Sundra’s description of finding participants for her study will remain with me. She said that she will look for participants and ask them – “not stalk them or anything like that ….” conjured up pictures of her hiding behind corners and grabbing likely participants as they walked past.

During the year the class, in true teamwork fashion, collaborated on holding a surprise baby shower for Sundra. We created a time capsule and a “graduation” certificate for her baby, Ndanatswa and collected money. We also collected money for Thandi and held a surprise celebratory party for Tumi (who had been accepted into a Clinical Psychology programme at UJ)

Classes which comprised mainly of workshops were extremely useful and covered a wide range of topics, from the practical – how to use SPSS and excel, the ins-and-outs of research consultation, putting together a personal development plan and selling yourself, interviewing techniques and how to present to contentious topics such as decolonialisation.
