Discourse analysis
Discourse analysis of the song “Lost ones” (1st part)
My interpretation of a discourse analysis is as follows:
Discourse analysis is an analysis of the communication which occurs between one or more people. This communication can take the form of auditory, textual or visual forms of communication. It includes aspects of shared conceptual values which are implied.
The context of this discourse consists of two people, a male and a female. The female has informed the male that she is pregnant prior to the commencement of the song.
Baby girl, I can’t imagine what it’s like for you | Baby girl | Baby girl is a term of endearment that suggests that they are in a relationship |
I can’t imagine what it’s like for you | I can’t imagine what it’s like for you
This indicates sympathy for the situation that the girl is in but which establishes a separation between the man and the woman. He acknowledges her situation but does not share it with her |
|
I got you pregnant now inside there is a life in you | Pregnant and there’s a life in you | Pregnancy implies not only a responsibility, but it has social consequences as well such as the reactions of their wider social environment (family friends etc). Stating the growth of a life inside the woman acknowledges that the situation they find themselves in is an existential one. Again, by using the words “life in you”, the man is distancing himself from the woman’s situation while at the same time acknowledging that he was the reason she is pregnant. |
